Into the CES 2020 scene

‘CES 2020’, the world’s biggest consumer electronics/IT trade show, was held for four days from January 7 to 10 at Las Vegas, USA. As the occasion provides firsthand visibility into how our life will change in a near future, Las Vegas was glowing hot with attention drawn from all corners of the world even before the exhibition kicked off.

Even though Las Vegas attracts numerous tourists from all over with fabulous hotels and casinos as well as splendid shows, CES is the biggest event of the year. Every early January, not only the exhibition hall but the entire city turns into one big giant exhibition venue. As over 170,000 guests visit the city around this time of the year, hotel rooms are priced five times higher than off-season rates, but hotel rooms are still sold out even at that pricing level.

Korea ranks third in the number of exhibitors at CES only next to the United States and China, with 390 business organizations including startups named on the list of exhibitors. At CES ‘Korean technology’ literally infected the scene. I wonder what technologies SK has showcased in the venue where everyone is CES-ready to turn the eyes of the world. Shall we walk into the scene together?

SK depicts a future beyond technology

At CES 2020, four SK affiliates including SK innovation, SK telecom, SK hynix, and SKC opened a joint pavilion under the theme of ‘SK Creates the Future’. This year is the second time SK has opened a joint pavilion at CES. As ‘future mobility’ is one of SK’s new growth drivers, SK expanded its venue at about eight times larger than that of last year to show the full picture of its mobility value chain ranging from EV batteries to in-vehicle media (infotainment), semiconductors, and cutting-edge automotive materials, with ‘SK inside’ which is SK’s proprietary one-stop solution.

CES 2020 was attended by SK leadership including Chairman Choi Shin-Won of SK networks, Executive Vice Chairman Chey Jae-won, Chairman of SUPEX Council Cho Dae-sik and CEOs of SK affiliates to demonstrate innovative technologies epitomizing SK’s technological prowess and prospect for collaboration opportunities with global business enterprises in search of new growth drivers aligned with future trends.

Being the one and only Korean energy/chemical company participating in CES 2020, SK innovation exhibited cutting-edge mobility technologies focused on EV highlighted as a future car paradigm. A moving model car and large screen images were merged by cutting-edge technologies to present the vision of future EV. In particular, top-notch battery technologies and materials including ‘ultra-long battery cell solution’, the world’s best ‘Ni-rich cathode manufacturing process’ and LiBS (Lithium-ion Battery Separator) that would ensure differentiated competitive advantage for SK innovation in EV battery sector were unveiled in this year’s CES. A wide range of eco-friendly, super-lightweight materials and lubricants that could enable and accelerate innovation in the E-mobility sector were also showcased to allow visitors to have higher expectations of future EV solutions.

SK telecom #5G #Mobility #5G-8K TV #Callar for Sero TV #Road Learner

SK telecom was the only Korean mobile telecom carrier that joined CES 2020 and demonstrated 5G-enabled mobility and media services. In this year’s CES, SK telecom unveiled ‘5G-8K TV’, the world’s first of its class, that had been jointly developed with Samsung Electronics since last September. This TV is designed to receive 8K UHD video directly with 5G technology. 8K denotes 8000 pixels widthwise and represents the highest TV resolution amongst commercial solutions. On top of that, the 5G-8K TV can receive 5G signals and thereby display large-volume content such as AR or VR content in the same manner as a 5G smartphone does. In addition, a variety of media solutions including ▲ Callar (Call+AR) for Sero TV ▲5GX Multiview ▲Jump AR Aqua World ▲Watch&Play ▲ATSC 3.0 Multiview, etc. turned the visitors’ eyes.

A slew of automotive driving solutions and technologies were also exhibited. SK telecom’s ▲ Integrated IVI (In-Vehicle Infotainment) ▲ ‘Road Learner’ supporting HD map update features ▲Single Photon LiDAR among others allowed the audience to visualize the future driving in an environment transformed by automotive driving technologies ahead of time.

SK hynix #6 Key Bizs. #D ram # NAND Flash Memory #Image Sensor

In line with its ‘Memory Centric World’, SK hynix showcased its semiconductor solutions including DRAM, NAND flash memory, image sensor, and others used in business domains such as AI, AR-VR, automotive, IoT, big data and 5G all of which could transform our daily life in the future. In addition, a futuristic city model where enormous amounts of data would be utilized was presented to allow visitors to visualize the roles that semiconductors could play in the city. Semiconductors inseparably embedded in our life will account for even more critical roles for the way forward. SK hynix also set up its own experience zone where visitors could experience consumer SSD products recently launched for B2C customers in the US as well as an exhibition corner where the company’s global presence was presented to highlight SK hynix’ initiative in ushering in the 4th Industrial Revolution.

SKC #PCT Cable #Specialty Films #Elecfoil #PU

SKC focused on introducing its own specialized mobility materials supporting advanced and value-added features. SKC showcased the world’s thinnest mobility battery cell anode material ‘Elecfoil’ as well as PCT films to be used for automotive cable and battery busbar, among other applications to shed the weight of future vehicles. In addition, polyurethane-based automotive interior products effective in drastically reducing emission of VOCs (volatile organic compounds) known to cause atopic dermatitis and mitigating noise/vibration of automobiles were showcased to bolster up SKC’s image as an eco-friendly corporation. Following CES 2020, SKC is determined to further expand its lineup of mobility materials, recognizing them as one of the pillars underpinning its future growth.

CES 2020 was a time of priceless experiences in which SK affiliates showcased the future roadmap of mobility sector enabled by a wide range of SK’s technological offerings including semiconductor, cutting-edge material and media, maximizing the creation of synergy ‘separately and together’. Furthermore, the trade show reaffirmed SK’s prestige as a global company. We give heartfelt applauses to SK standing tall in the midst of the world.
